Where could this project take place?
Deployed by a team of Frisbee golfers or simply a group of sundry people who might not otherwise be engaged together, Throw-n-Sow would leave a living record of their interaction. By depositing the seeds of selected flowering plants, butterflies, birds, and other living organisms would retrace the originary game of leisure.
Imagine this game played over a boundary between two countries where people are on either side are not free to cross. Perhaps it is a contentious political boundary. The living organisms would then follow the path of flowers that breach the border, drawing attention to the politics of this line through poetic performance.
In areas such as hurricane-prone areas where the erosion of topsoils through water-run off poses serious problems, Throw-n-Sow could provide a fun way to involve youth in learning about quickly-germinating native grasses that naturally mitigate floods. Combined with an interdisciplinary curriculum integrating biology, ecology, meteorology, sociology, and art, Throw-n-Sow would provide the impetus of urgency and social relevance often lacking in standard educational curricula-sorely needed in communities where profound structural problems involve an absence of organized education for k-12 youth.
This project could also take place in your backyard.
