| The banana is a tongue-in-cheek symbol of my split ethnic identity (half Ecuadorian, half Chinese) and pokes fun at the attempt to capture identty through ethnicity alone. The banana is Ecuador's secondary export after oil and the world's fourth largest perishable commodity; it is through this commodity that Europeans and North Americans remember Ecuador, a country with relative little geopolitical significance beyond its role as a 'banana republic,' or a supplier of raw goods. Additionally, 'banana' is a slang term for Asian-Americans who identify themselves as culturally white ("yellow on the outside, white in the middle.") | |
